    STUDY HALL:
    The Ocean Blue

I am thankful to Hershey, PA for three things: road lamps in the shape of Hershey Kisses, free chocolate just about everywhere a visitor stops, and for being the hometown of one of my favorite bands, The Ocean Blue.

Playing out from the basements of each other's homes, high school friends David Schelzel, Steve Lau and Bobby Mittan formed one of the most memorable bands of the 80's. Upon graduating high school and picking up Rob Minnig on drums in 1987, they released their first album titled quite simply, The Ocean Blue. With the release of their debut album, alternative fans clamored for more after listing to "Between Something and Nothing" and "Drifting, Falling".

Ironically in 1991 while I was graduating from high school, Ceruelean was released and included "Ballerina out of Control" and during that point of my life, it couldn't have been any more fitting. The entire album was filled with moody lyrics and could easily drift you into an introspective trance as the songs belted from the stereo. It was definitely a great album for those gloomy days of adolescence and the unknown. It was also in this year that they toured with another one of my most favorite bands, The Psychedelic Furs.

Beneath the Rhythm and Sound was released shortly after and brought The Ocean Blue to MTV status. In 1994 there were several memorable moments in the band's history. Peace of Mind brought us one of my favorite covers of all time, "There is a Light that Never Goes Out", by the Smiths. Steve also left the band to start his own record label and Oed Ronne replaced him. Filled with guitar driven sounds and long hours in the recording studio, See The Ocean Blue was released in 1995 and quite possibly gave us two of the best singles from their genius, "Whenever You're Around" and my personal favorite, "Slide".

We all survived Y2K and The Ocean Blue survived lyrically with the release of Davy Jones' Locker in 2001. Interestingly enough, this album was recorded in their own recording studio, which is evident as you listen to the band reveal their true inner being. If you were to ask any die hard fan what their most favorite album would be, this one could quite possibly top their list.

The Ocean Blue released a 6 single record titled Waterworks in 2001 which is basically a tease to the full length release they are working on now. Rumor has it that the follow on album is supposed to make an appearance sometime in 2006. In the meantime, I await anxiously with bated breath for this compilation of genius.
