STUDY HALL:
The Cult
Music for me is like a photo album in my mind. Certain songs can bring back memories as if I were turning pages in a book of time. "She Sells Sanctuary" by The Cult, brings me back to my freshman year of high school, of sneaking out late at night to a bon fire on the beach, and the smell of cinder mixed with the essence of ice cold Heineken.
Also known as the Southern Death Cult and shortly after, Death Cult, Ian Astbury took up residence in Bradford, Yorkshire and was awakened to the sounds of music coming from the basement of his flat on several occasions. Upon further investigation, he found what was soon to be the band he would sing vocals with consisting of Hag Quereshi on drums, David 'Buzz' Burrows on guitar, and Barry Jepson on bass.
In 1982, Southern Death Cult recorded their first self-titled album and then toured with Bauhaus in the beginning of 1983. In an effort to escape the band's punk image and preserve his native Indian concept, he constructed a new band under the name Death Cult and made a pact with himself that they would not succumb to the hype of being classified with that genre.
It wasn't until 1984 that Ian decided to make a final name change to quite simply, The Cult. Their first album Dreamtime, was released and sky rocketed to #1 on the independent charts with the single "Spiritwalker". This was also the same time that Les Warner was scooped up and "She Sells Sanctuary" was soon to bring memories to my high school years.
However, in 1985 we were given one of The Cult's most memorable albums, Love. Filled with hard rock undertones and an obvious Led Zeppelin influence, The Cult soon moved into the hard rock genre with Electric. The success of this album made them well known in both the UK and the US.
In 1988, the band was downsized to only Astbury, Stewart, and Duff and the help of Mickey Curry on drums with the release of another one of my favorite albums, Sonic Temple. In 1991, minus Stewart, Ceremony was released with the help of Charley Drayton on bass and once again the help of Curry.
So where is Ian now?? Well faithful Edge listeners, this is where I would normally give you your assignment for the month. But frankly, I never did my homework in school so I'll cut you a break. These days you can catch Ian fronting The Doors, 21st Century. Tom, a faithful Edge 101 listener from New York wrote in to say, "Ian's performance is as if Jim Morrison was reincarnated and is definitely a life experience you don't wanna miss if given the opportunity."
